JS Clark Park – BREC Golf

JS Clark Golf Course Renovations Complete

BREC’s newly renovated J.S. Clark Golf Course will re-open to the public beginning Monday, May 1, 2023. The course originally opened as a short 9-hole course in 1954 and closed in March of 2021 for renovations. The completion of this project represents a dramatic step forward for J.S. Clark Golf Course and BREC Golf as a part of Phase 1 of the Greenwood Park and Baton Rouge Zoo Master Plan. BREC plans to host an official opening to celebrate the renovations in July.

J.S. Clark is one of BREC’s two 9-hole golf courses, the other being City Park Golf Course.  With Dumas Golf Course closing in conjunction with the re-opening of Clark, BREC continues to operate five golf courses across the agency.  For more information on future improvements at Greenwood Park, visit brec.org/ReimagineZooGreenwood.

The original 9-hole course was 1,861 yards at its longest, included only par 3 and par 4 holes, and played to a total par of 31.  The new J.S. Clark 9-hole course stretches to 3,162 yards and features two par 5’s, two par 3’s, and five par 4 holes for a total par of 36. By playing the course twice, golfers have the option of playing 18-holes on a 6,324-yard course with a total par of 72.  This 18-hole length is more than 100 yards longer than BREC’s Webb Park Golf Course.

The renovation includes unique, large putting greens feature levels and slopes ranging from 8,500 to 10,500 square feet each allowing the space to use two holes on each green, so that 18-hole players can play to a different hole through the two rounds of 9-holes. Standing out among them, the par three 5th hole features a putting green that is almost 50 yards deep from front to back.  For an 18-hole player this could create a three or four club difference between the first and second time they play the par 3 hole.

The course also offers a lighted driving range and short game practice area that are open for public use. Golf cart and club rentals are also available.

Phased Reopening of Golf Courses Beginning April 30

Since announcing the closure of its six golf courses on March 23, BREC staff has implemented additional operational safety measures and created a three-phase plan to safely reopen the courses while complying with Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards  most recent Stay at Home Order and other federal, state, and local guidelines. Each phase and the associated safety measures were determined by recommendations made from health and government authorities on social movement and interaction.

Phase one will begin Thursday, April 30 when three of BREC’s six golf courses will reopen for play. The golf courses to reopen first are: Santa Maria, Beaver Creek and Webb Memorial golf courses. Woody Dumas, J.S. Clark and Historic City Park golf courses will reopen on Friday, May 1 allowing staff to make any necessary adjustments to the plan after observing Thursday’s operations.

Additional safety measures put in place to further protect the public and BREC staff include the following:

  • No cash transactions will be accepted, credit cards or gift cards only accepted.
  • A discounted rate will be provided to customers who pre-pay their green fees online for less interaction with staff at the golf courses using this link: http://golf.brec.org/prepay/.
  • Limited or no access to the clubhouse – Sales transactions will occur at a door or window.
  • Limited access to clubhouse bathrooms, where access is available through a separate entrance.
  • Tee times will be extended to every 12-minutes in order to keep safe distances between groups.
  • “Walk-on” (non-tee time) play may be unavailable or very limited at busier facilities.
  • Cart rentals are for single riders only and carts will be sanitized after each use.
  • Cart rentals will be limited, as some course may be ‘walking only’ for some portion of the day.
  • Multiple signs will be displayed on courses to remind golfers to maintain safe distances.
  • No outing groups, tournaments or organized play of more than 10 people will be allowed.
  • Employees will complete a daily health screening questionnaire.
  • Masks and gloves will be provided to staff and frequent disinfecting schedules will be mandated.

Before BREC closed golf courses, the following safety measures had been put in place and will continue for the foreseeable future:

  • Golfers who feel sick are asked to remain at home.
  • Golfers are not allowed to touch the flagstick.
  • Hole liners are upside down so the ball can’t fully fall into the hole.
  • No bunker rakes on the course, golfers are asked to do their best to smooth the sand.
  • Water coolers are removed from the course.
  • Ball-washers are removed or covered.

“In accordance with the Governor and Mayor’s order, our primary recommendation to the public remains to stay home and only go out for essential activities.  However, like the CDC, we realize one of those essential activities includes getting active outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air and reaping the many positive physical and mental benefits provided by parks and golf courses with green spaces and trails for walking, jogging, biking and hiking,” said Superintendent Corey Wilson. “We know that BREC parks are part of the solution to the underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity that plague our community. As such, our goal is to have the entire system reopened as soon as it is possible to do so safely,” Wilson said.

Superintendent Wilson is serving on the Governor’s Resilient Louisiana Commission, advising the state in his role on the Restaurant and Entertainment Task Force.

Additional information regarding the phased reopening of the remainder of BREC’s system including the Baton Rouge Zoo, Liberty Lagoon, summer camps, playgrounds, athletic programs and venues, and other amenities is expected soon following additional guidance from industry professionals, and state and local public health and government officials.

BREC staff will continue providing content on the virtual portal it created to give people access to the park system through videos, activity sheets and links to other partners offering virtual services to the public sheltering at home. The portal can be accessed at brec.org/refresh.

Who designed BREC Golf Courses? Might be really surprised!

Compared to many cities within the USA that have public courses owned and operated by the Parks & Rec… BREC actually has a lot of famous architects involved in its history.  One that the citizen golfers of Baton Rouge can be proud of.

Craig Schreiner is a golf course architect that has designed or renovated over two dozen courses nationally.  Schreiner designed and built Beaver Creek.  He also did a complete renovation and building of J S Clark Golf Course; he has done several First Tees nationally.  He also did some renovation on City Park Golf Course by reconstructing two holes, adding irrigation, and installing tiff dwarf in the greens.

Tom Bendelow is one of the reasons City Park Golf Course is referred to as Historic City Park Golf Course.  Bendelow came over from Scotland during the time golf was beginning to be played in the USA.  Contributing to the growth of golf, Bendelow may have been the most prolific golf course designer and builder ever.  Bendelow has several courses that have hosted PGA, US Open, and Ryder Cup events.  City Park was one of the last courses he designed.  His name and stature in the game is enormous.

Robert Trent Jones is basically the icon of American golf course designers.  Easily recognized by golfers who seek out great challenges, Jones has designed and built some of the best courses in the country. Only two courses in Louisiana have his signature, and one is here in Baton Rouge – Santa Maria Golf Course.  Supremely symbolic of his style, this golf course meets the standard of his basic philosophy… par is a good score.
