Pro Tip:

The first hole should be a gentle introduction to the course. This shorter hole can be safely played by most golfers with an iron off the tee and short iron to the green. Keep your tee shot left of the cart path on the right-hand side, right of the path may result in a hard to find ball. From the back tee a carry of about 120 yards is needed to cross the Cypress Bayou ravine. A tee is located across the bridge if you’re not ready to take on the ravine with your first swing. Note that there are two flags on each putting green. Pick a flag color to play to on your first nine holes and then play to the other color on your second nine holes.

Hole 2

Pro Tip:

Most golfers will not reach this long par 5 in two shots, plan on it being a 3 shot hole. Off the tee stay to the left of the cart path, it’s easy to lose a ball in the high grass right of the path. The green is bordered on the left by a pond. A lay-up that provides a wedge shot to the green is a good strategy.

Hole 3

Pro Tip:

Accuracy is more important than distance on this shorter par 4. This putting green includes front, middle, left, and right levels and will require an accurate approach shot to get close to the hole.

Hole 4

Pro Tip:

This par 3 features a large green that is easier to hit, but harder to get close to the hole. When you’re done, cross the road and go past the tennis course to hole 5/14.

Hole 5

Pro Tip:

Distance is the key on this long and relatively thin putting green. Measuring almost 45 yards deep, the location of the hole on the green could make your club selection vary significantly. When finished, follow the scenic path through the woods to the next tee.

Hole 6

Pro Tip:

Anything to the right of the trees is good on your tee shot. This is another multi-level putting green where accuracy on the approach shot will be needed to get close to the hole.

Hole 7

Pro Tip:

Off the tee don’t get blocked by the trees on the right. Another 40+ yard deep green makes club selection important on the approach shot. There’s plenty of slope on this green, uphill putts will need to be hit firmly to make it to the hole.

Hole 8

Pro Tip:

Avoid the trees off the tee and a wide fairway awaits. Don’t go long on your second shot, there’s not much room behind the putting green.

Hole 9

Pro Tip:

It’s time for a big tee shot if you want to reach the green in two strokes. Avoid the trees on the left and the bunkers on the right. If you’re not going for the green in two, lay up at least 70 yards short of the green to keep the water on the left out of play. If the hole is on the left side of the green near the water, an approach shot to the middle of the green still leaves a makeable putt.

About J.S. Clark Golf Course

J.S. Clark Golf Course originally opened as a short 9-hole course in 1954.  The 2023 renovation represents a dramatic step forward for J.S. Clark Golf Course and for golf in BREC’s Greenwood Park.

The original 9-hole course was 1,861 yards at its longest, included only par 3 and par 4 holes, and played to a par of 31.  The new J.S. Clark 9-hole course stretches to 3,162 yards, features two par 5’s, two par 3’s, and five par 4 holes for a par of 36.  Golfers have the option of playing 18-holes on a 6,324-yard course that plays to a par of 72.  That length is more than 100 yards longer than BREC’s Webb Park golf course.

A unique feature of the renovated J.S. Clark course is large putting greens that feature levels and slopes and allow the room to use two holes on each green so 18-hole players can play to a different hole as they play the nine holes twice.   These putting greens range from 8,500 to 10,500 square feet each, the par three 5th hole features a putting green that is almost 50 yards deep from front to back.   An eighteen-hole player could have a three or four club difference between the first and second time they play the par 3 hole.

J.S. Clark golf course also has a lighted driving range and short game practice area that are open for public use.

Tee times are available online at golf.brec.org, or by calling the golf shop at 225-775-9008.

The 2021-2023 renovation of J.S. Clark golf course is part of BREC’s Greenwood Park and Baton Rouge Zoo renovation project.  To see the full scope of the project, visit brec.org/ReimagineZooGreenwood

J.S. Clark Golf Course is the home of The First Tee of East Baton Rouge Parish, an authorized chapter of the national youth development program that teaches juniors ages 7-18 life skills against the backdrop of the game of golf. The program is a progressive-style activity-based program that schedules clinics, play days and workshops utilizing J.S. Clark Golf Course and the classroom within the clubhouse. Visit The First Tee Program page for details, schedules, and other information.
