Footgolf – BREC Golf

About the Sport

Footgolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The main goal of footgolf is to get a soccer ball from the marked teeing ground into the specialty footgolf hole with the lowest number of kicks possible. Each hole will have a listed par (just like in golf) and the winner is the player who plays the prescribed rounds with the lowest number of kicks.

The game is played the same way as golf, except players use a football instead of a golf ball, and the ball is kicked rather than struck with a club, working towards a 21-inch “cup” in place of the usual golf hole. The player who plays the 9 or 18 holes with the fewest shots wins.  The first shot has to be played from the tee box, and to reach the hole, bunkers, trees, water and hills have to be crossed or avoided. This means a powerful shot is useful, but not decisive. Reading the course, a smart approach and accurate putting are even more important.

Because soccer balls travel less distance than golf balls, footgolf is played on holes shorter than those used for golf, with a course averaging 150 yards per hole. Pars are typically five or below. Compared to golf, footgolf is quicker to play, more accessible to players, and does not require expensive equipment.

What to Know Before You Head Out

Collared shirts are encouraged, but not mandatory.

Shorts or golf pants allow for easy maneuverability when kicking the ball.

Players may not wear studded cleats. Please wear tennis shoes or indoor turf shoes instead.

You can play with your own #4 or #5 size soccer ball. BREC will also have balls available for rental in the golf pro shop if you forget yours.

We always remind all footgolfers to observe normal golf etiquette at all time on the course and be courteous to playing golfers nearby.

There is no age restriction as long as your group keeps the pace of play at a good rate for the other golfers.

You may use a golf cart or walk the course, but it is actually quicker to walk because you are not hitting the ball hundreds of yards.  Walking also encourages exercise and the endurance component of the game.

Why Play FootGolf?

Anyone can do it!  You just have to be able to kick a ball.  It is fun for the whole family.  It’s much less expensive, and there is no equipment required other than a soccer ball.  It is great exercise.  It can be used as a social or team building experience.  You can hold fundraiser or charity outings as well.  It’s quick.  Players can play an 18-hole course in 2 hours.  It is for both recreational players and competitive players.
